Track your brand position in Google Gemini answers. Setup, metrics that matter, and what to do when your ranking drops. Field guide from the AURALIS team.
Google Gemini is now even more powerful by deciding which product to give a demo for when a buyer asks for a recommendation for something in your category of products! The brand that comes first in the Gemini answer for a particular question about your products and services gets the demo first, and all the other brands for that question get no demos. This article explains what Gemini rank tracking for answers in a category of products means for online marketing for that category of products, the metrics that tracking of answers by Gemini for questions in your category of products that a buyer might ask indicates, and sets up monitoring of Gemini answers for questions for your products for online marketing tracking and decision-making instead of for building dashboards.
In this guide we are going to go over what Gemini rank tracking actually means, the relevant metrics to keep an eye on and most importantly we are going to set up a system to track and utilize the relevant data in order to make decisions rather than to just have another dashboard to look at every week.
What Gemini rank tracking is not
What Gemini rank tracking is not
It is not Google search rank. Classic SEO tools track which keyword ranks where on the search results page. That data is still relevant for organic traffic, but it tells you nothing about how Gemini answers questions in your category.
3. It is not a one-time audit. A one-time review of Gemini answers is not a tracking program. Instead, the rankings shift from week to week and tracking the changes will help to provide a level of insight into how answers are evolving.
It is not a one-time audit. Gemini answers shift week over week. A snapshot is a starting line, not a tracking strategy.
What it actually is
Gemini rank tracking measures three things over time:
How often your brand appears in answers to buyer-relevant prompts.
How your brand is positioned within the answer. This can be within the first paragraph of the answer, within the third paragraph of the answer, or even in a footnote at the bottom of the answer. Note that tracking in footnotes can be difficult and may not always be worth the time.
What sentiment Gemini uses when describing your brand and your competitors.
The number of times your brand appears in Gemini answers to relevant questions
The slot position of your brand within the answer (e.g. first paragraph, third paragraph, footnote, etc.
The sentiment that Gemini uses to describe your brand versus your competitors
Setup in four steps
1. List the prompts
List a set of questions that a buyer would actually ask. Avoid keyword rich questions and aim to create a set of conversational questions covering your space, your product and your competition. 20 to 50 is a reasonable amount of prompts to start with.

2. Pick a tracker
The next step would be to pick a tracker. Since AURALIS is able to track all four leading AI engines - Google's LAI, Microsoft's Bot Framework, IBM's Watson, and Facebook's Gemini - we could test out Gemini using the free Aura Check on the AURALIS Home page, or use Profound, Otterly.ai, or Trakkr.ai. Each has its advantages and disadvantages (price, coverage, depth, etc.).
3. Set a baseline
Run the full prompt list for your first tracking run. Log the scores for all prompts, the slot positions where your brand and your competitors were mentioned, and the list of your competitors for each prompt. This will be your day-zero tracking baseline. Without this data, any improvements that you make will not be measurable.
4. Set the cadence
Daily - the standard for most categories
Weekly - suitable for slow-moving categories that rarely change
Hourly - excessive for most teams and typically used for brief periods such as during a launch or crisis
Metrics that move pipeline
The metric that matters for pipeline generation from AI is Citation Share within the Gemini answer. In other words, if your brand gets consistently featured within the first paragraph of relevant answers, you will get more discovery calls. And if you are consistently feature in the third paragraph of no, your conversion will be severely impacted. Secondary metrics worth tracking would include Sentiment Polarity (per AI engine), Citations (from authority domains), and Answer Freshness (Gemini gives higher rank to more recent sources).
Secondary metrics worth watching: sentiment polarity per AI engine, citation count from authority domains, and answer freshness (Gemini favors recent sources).
What to do when your rank drops
Three common fixes, in order of effort:
Earn 1-2 citations on domains that Gemini already trusts for your category as per AURALIS's debug report.
Create a comparison or alternatives-themed page targeting the specific prompt you have fallen behind on, and post it with direct answer format and proper FAQ schema on the page.
The starter move
Run a free Aura Check on your own brand. The check covers Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity in one report. You will see your starting score, your competitor list, and three specific fixes ranked by impact.
